What is a Strong Password?

Regarding the security of your online accounts and personal data, you’ve probably heard experts recommend using strong passwords. But what is a strong password?

A strong password is one that is not easily guessed. Therefore, a mix of characters, numbers, symbols and upper/lower case make up a strong password. Usually, a strong password contains at least 8 characters, digits and/or symbols; however, longer is even better.

Even if you start with an easily remembered (or easily guessed password), you can strengthen it greatly with some simple modifications.

For examples, if you want to include a birthday or year, use a backward version, such as 3891 instead of 1983.
If you want to include your pet’s name, modify the case: rOvEr instead of Rover.
Exchange letters for some numbers, such as ! for 1, E for 3, B for 8, T for 7, and S for 5.
In this way, “Rover1983” becomes “rOvEr!9BE” or “rOvErEB9!”
Still easily remembered, especially after repeated use, but not easily guessed.
