… the IRS has an automatic approval for an installment payment plan under certain conditions. This payment plan can be requested when the federal income tax return is filed (either by mail or electronic filing) or later.
Until recently, the state of Indiana did not have a payment plan request form or online process; every request for a payment plan had to be negotiated with the Department of Revenue individually and approved or denied by a DOR agent personally.
Now the Indiana Department of Revenue allows taxpayers to set up a payment plan online at the DOR’s customer portal, INTIME, for tax debts more than $100. The amount owed determines the maximum length of time allowed for a payment plan.
To set up a payment plan, you’ll need to log in to INTIME. Follow the guide for setting up your payment plan.
Automatic recurring payments are scheduled from your payment method, so you don’t have to worry about missing a due date.
In addition to this online method, Indiana DOR Customer Service representatives still help set up payment plans at taxpayer request by phone or in person. Call 317-232-2240, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. ET or make an appointment to visit one of DOR’s District Offices.
Important notes:
Although some payment plans may reduce penalties, payment plans do not stop interest from accruing.
Never default on a payment plan. Make sure you make have sufficient funds in your account on the payment date and make the required payment on time. Make allowances for bank holidays and mail delays. Regardless of your excuse or reason (e.g., “I couldn’t access my AT&T account on the payment date”), a late payment will void your current agreement, prevent future payment plans and cause the current debt to become immediately due.
